Practical German learning guide

How to remember German noun genders

Gender is easiest to remember when the article is part of the word from the first meeting, not an extra fact added later.

Store article and noun together

Say and write der Tisch, die Frage and das Problem. Colour can be a temporary cue, but the spoken chunk is what must survive when the colour is gone.

Use dependable endings

Patterns such as -ung, -heit and -keit being feminine are worth learning because they predict many words. Treat weaker patterns as hints, then confirm the article on the word card.

Include the plural

The useful noun packet is article, singular, plural and meaning. Learning die Stadt and die Städte together prevents a second round of repair later.

Test the article, not your familiarity

Seeing der beside a noun many times feels familiar without proving recall. Hide the article, choose it, read the correction as a complete chunk and bring misses into spaced Study.

Turn every miss into one spoken correction

When the answer is wrong, say the full corrected packet once: der Gedanke, die Gedanken. Then use the singular in a short sentence. The Noun Challenge finds the gap; Study makes the corrected form return after other words have interrupted it.
