How to learn German grammar without drowning in rules
Grammar sticks when a rule predicts what happens in a sentence. Learn one contrast at a time, notice it in real examples, then make the choice yourself.
Turn rules into decisions
Do not only read that movement can take the accusative. Ask: is the action crossing into a destination or staying in one place? A useful rule ends in a choice you can practise.
Use pairs that expose the difference
Contrast im Zimmer with ins Zimmer, weil ich komme with ich komme, or den Studenten with der Student. Near-identical examples make the changing element visible.
Keep the session narrow
One focused grammar unit is enough for a sitting. Read the explanation, cover the answer in three examples, then write two sentences of your own. Return tomorrow before adding another exception.
Attach grammar to vocabulary
Cases need nouns and prepositions; tense needs real verbs. Follow a grammar unit with a small Study set so the forms appear inside language you are also learning to understand.
Check whether the rule can predict
After a unit, take a sentence you have not seen and explain the choice before checking it: why dative, why verb-final, why this article? If the rule predicts the form, practise it in Study. If it does not, reread the contrast instead of memorising the finished sentence.
