Free German vocabulary practice for words you will actually meet
Vokabahn is an always-free German vocabulary trainer made to help learners understand the language heard on trains, at work, in shops, online, and in everyday conversation. It combines spaced-repetition flashcards, natural German pronunciation, real-life example sentences, and focused vocabulary games without requiring an account.
Progress without the mystery
The Today bar counts a card only after you remember it. Pressing Forgot keeps that card in the remaining total until you answer it successfully later.
Four simple choices
Choose how recall felt. The small label is the next review estimate. Defaults are 10 minutes, 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days; you can change them in Settings.
Three games to play
The games use the word set selected above the game screen, including learning levels, usage-frequency ranges, sports, hobbies, and activities.
Match German words to English meanings before the 75-second clock runs out. Solved cards fade away in place, while later refills bring in their missing partners.
Choose the correct English meaning, build a streak, and score as many points as possible in 60 seconds. Each answer advances automatically to keep the pace fast.
Listen to natural German pronunciation and identify the word across ten rounds. The answer and definition remain visible until you press Next.
Levels and quality checks
Every card has one clear learning label. Standard vocabulary uses A1-C2; curated slang and highly colloquial vocabulary uses Street instead of pretending slang is a seventh CEFR level. Word type, activity, and usage rank remain available as optional filters.
For 10,560 cards, the level is matched directly to graded German material. Another 639 transparent compounds or word-family forms inherit a documented level, and 1,801 otherwise unattested items use an estimate calibrated against the directly matched vocabulary. CEFR does not prescribe one universal level for every individual word, so a card's level tooltip says whether its result is direct, inferred, or estimated.
All 13,000 German example sentences are unique, and every card passes a full-deck check that its headword really appears in its German sentence. Beyond that, every one of the 13,000 cards has now been read individually — the sentence, its English translation, and the word-by-word alignment between them. 2,118 sentences were rewritten and 8,069 re-aligned. That produced 87,684 word-level links, every one of which resolves against its own sentence.
Every word has its own page
The trainer keeps its 13,000 words inside the app, which is fine for studying and useless for anyone searching the web for one German word. So every word also has its own page — the checked sentence, the translation, the word-by-word alignment with working hover, the principal forms and both audio clips. Tap any word in the library to open it.
There are guides too — gender, the four cases, separable verbs, word order, the two past tenses and adjective endings. Short, and written to be read once and used.
Tell me when something is wrong
13,000 words is a lot of German and some of it will still be wrong. Under every card, and at the bottom of every word page, there is a Spotted a mistake? box.
Reports are private. They go to the person who maintains the deck and nobody else, they are never shown on the site, you do not need an account, and nothing identifying is stored. Reporting a wrong article or a clumsy translation is the fastest way to get it fixed.
Privacy policy
Last updated 10 August 2026. Vokabahn has no user accounts, no sign-up, and no server-side profile of you.
Terms of use
Vokabahn is offered free of charge, as-is, for personal language study. There is no warranty that a translation, level label, or example sentence is correct for your particular exam or situation, and it is not a substitute for a teacher, a dictionary, or professional advice.
You may study, quiz, and export your own progress freely. Bulk copying or redistributing the word set, the audio, or the site itself is not permitted; the underlying dictionary and corpus material carries its own upstream licences, listed under Levels and sources above.
The service may change or stop at any time. Your locally stored progress is yours: export it if you want a durable copy.
Contact and legal notice
Questions, corrections to a word or sentence, and privacy requests are all welcome at the address below. Reporting a wrong translation is genuinely useful and gets fixed.
