How to prepare
A practical route from format to exam day
Start with the official format, not random vocabulary
Open the current Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD I / II) source and identify the modules, response types and delivery mode at your centre. Note whether your exam is paper, digital or modular. Then take one diagnostic mock before studying; the useful result is the module that consumed time or made its instructions feel unfamiliar.
Build the ability this level actually requires
process dense texts and speech, infer stance and produce precise, well-structured academic or professional language. Practise synthesis across sources, register control, note-taking and timed production with a deliberate editing pass. A list of rare words is not exam preparation. Reliable common vocabulary, clear connectors and the ability to paraphrase when a word disappears are more valuable.
A workable six-week plan
In weeks one and two, learn the task types and build one routine for each skill. In weeks three and four, complete timed modules and label every error by cause: instruction, timing, vocabulary, grammar or organisation. In week five, combine modules into a full simulation. In the final week, reduce new material and rehearse the exact procedures you will use on exam day.
Tactics for the four skills
In reading, read the question before hunting for detail and locate evidence rather than a familiar word. In listening, use preview time to predict the kind of information required. In writing, protect minutes for planning and editing. In speaking, give a structured answer, a reason and an example; fluency means keeping meaning moving, not speaking as fast as possible.
On exam day
Confirm identification, arrival time and permitted materials in advance. Follow the instruction literally and do not spend an entire module on one item. If a word is unknown, infer its role from context and move on. Check the answer sheet or screen before submitting, then reset mentally for the next module.
Common mistakes to avoid
Practise deliberately, not just for more hours
- Memorising long templates that cannot adapt to the real prompt.
- Practising without a timer, then discovering the pacing problem in the exam.
- Checking the right answer without diagnosing why the wrong one looked plausible.
- Using difficult vocabulary at the expense of accuracy and organisation.
- Relying on old requirements instead of the provider's current page.
